Some kitchens need replacing. Others need rethinking. If the layout has never worked, the room feels smaller than it should, or you're staring at a wall wondering what's on the other side of it, that's a renovation rather than a straight swap.
It's worth being clear about which one you're after, because they're different jobs with different budgets and timescales.
A replacement keeps the layout and changes what's in it. Units, worktops and appliances out, new ones in, services stay roughly where they are. That's a kitchen installation, and it's usually the quicker and cheaper route.
A renovation changes the room itself. Moving the sink to a different wall, taking out a partition, relocating the boiler, replacing the flooring, reworking the lighting, or opening the kitchen into a dining space. More disruption, more trades, and a bigger difference at the end.

Every renovation is different, but most draw on some combination of the following.
Moving the sink, hob or appliances to work better with how you actually use the room, rather than where the last kitchen happened to put them.
Removing a partition between the kitchen and dining room, widening a doorway, or closing off an opening that isn't earning its space.
Relocating waste and supply pipes, adding sockets where you need them, and moving circuits to suit the new layout.
Levelling and replacing the floor, which is often the point at which an old kitchen's problems become obvious.
Task lighting over work surfaces, under-cabinet lighting and ceiling layouts planned around the new arrangement rather than inherited from the old one.
Walls and ceilings made good after the structural and service work, ready for the new kitchen to go in.
Southend and the towns around it have a real mix of housing, and the age of a property tends to dictate what a kitchen renovation involves before anyone has chosen a door style.
Common through Westcliff, Leigh and parts of central Southend. Kitchens are often narrow galleys at the back, sometimes in a later extension. The usual questions are whether to open into the rear reception room and what to do about a floor that has settled unevenly over a century.
Typically a separate kitchen and dining room with a wall between them. Removing or opening up that wall is the single change that most transforms the room, though it needs proper structural assessment first.
Usually more generous room sizes but dated service runs. Rewiring and replumbing are often the bulk of the work, with the visible kitchen the easier part.
Common around Shoeburyness and the newer developments. The layout generally works, but builder-standard units and worktops are often the first thing owners want changed. These are frequently straight upgrades rather than full renovations.
Your Kitchen transformation
A renovation is more disruptive than a straight kitchen swap, and it's better to know that upfront than find out in week two.
There will be a stretch with no kitchen at all. There'll be dust, and days when several trades are in the house at once. Most people set up a temporary kitchen somewhere else in the property with a kettle, a microwave and a fridge, and manage fine.
What we can do is tell you the sequence in advance, so you know which week is the noisy one and roughly when you'll get the room back.
A renovation typically runs for a few weeks from start to finish, depending on how much structural and service work is involved. Jobs that need building control sign-off or bespoke cabinetry with a long lead time run longer.
You'll get a schedule with the quote showing what happens when.
Renovations vary more than replacements because the scope varies more. Moving a sink across a room, taking out a wall and relaying a floor are three separate pieces of work, and a project involving all three sits in a different bracket to one involving none.
We quote per project after seeing the room, so you get a figure based on what's actually there rather than an average. If parts of it can wait, we'll tell you which ones.
